This article is for coordinators and admins who are running team-based experiences, and will help you to understand and respond to the data available on your Teams Tab, including keeping check on team members’ and mentors’ sentiment over time, as well as detecting team dissonance.


In remote project-based learning experiences, being up-to-date on teams’ effectiveness and performance is a challenge. Coordinators might commonly send out surveys, regular emails to supervisors or make phone calls, but this is time consuming and difficult to scale for a large cohort.

The Teams Tab on Practera gives you real-time data on team sentiment and progress throughout the learning experience. The colourful and dynamic pie charts you can see on your Teams Tab display team members’ responses to Pulse Checks which are triggered at multiple points throughout the experience.

What are Pulse Checks?

Pulse Checks are light and quick multiple choice questions for team members and their reviewer to answer at key points of their experiential learning. This is how a pulse check would display in the app:

These questions would typically check in on important metrics to your team project. Example student pulse checks include:

  • Do you feel your team is on track to complete your project? Yes absolutely / We’re getting there / Not yet

  • Have you met with your mentor this week? Yes / No

  • In which stage do you think your team is at? Forming / Storming / Norming / Performing

A reviewer’s pulse check might ask if they think their team is on track or meeting expectations.

Analysing the Pie Chart data on your Teams Tab

The constant data stream on the Practera Teams Tab provides you with actionable insights on your dashboard that might require an intervention. Make sure to check your dashboard frequently so you don't miss an opportunity to bring your participants back on track.

Pulse Check dashboard charts

The pie charts on your dashboard show the average pulse check values per team. There is one pie chart per question (in the standard configuration you will find 3 pie charts for participants and 1 pie chart for mentors). Practera analyses all answers and categorises the team average into 4 categories:

  • No issues (green): The average score is 80 or higher

  • Observe (yellow): The average score is between 60-79

  • Caution (orange): The average score is between 40-59

  • Intervene (red): The average score is below 40

For example, the "Do you feel that your team is on track? No (0) /Yes (100)" chart, a team of 5 participants would appear red if only 1 person answered "Yes" and 4 participants answered "No" because the average value is (1 * 100 + 4 * 0) / 5 = 20.

If the team becomes slightly more confident and 2 participants would answer "yes" while 3 answered with "No", the team would appear as orange because the average value is (2 * 100 + 3 * 0) / 5 = 40.

Team specific pulse check data

When clicking on any part in the pie charts, a popup appears (see image below) which signals the specific teams who gave that response. E.g. clicking on a red wedge will show all teams with an average score below 40.

Analysing Team Progress & History

So you now have the team average scores, but you probably now want to see individual participant responses to the pulse checks. Checking individual responses will flag any team dissonance to you, for example, if one participant is extremely dissatisfied and others are not.

Under the pie charts select the team whose responses you want to review in the dropdown menu.

To see how the answers have changed over time, you can change the date by clicking on the little dots on either of the lines in the line chart. The table will update automatically for the selected date.

You will also be able to see the interventions that have been taken with the selected team. This data is taken from the Interventions Register.

Now you have a rich dataset of team sentiment, it's time to evaluate which kind of intervention might be necessary. This might be a message to the team in the Cohort Chat or a comm to see if everything's okay.
